Back from Amsterdam

Fri Jun 5, 2009, 11:45 PM
Guest speaker at Mobile Monday Amsterdam. Taking the world by storm, yo.

Have you heard about Augmented Reality? That's what I'm working on and making sweet progress.

Check out my talk from the conference:

The world is going to change my friends, and I am right at the forefront. Just wait until you see how AR is going to change the way you think about art and being...deviant.

Stay tuned. I know I haven't posted here or been active for a hell of a long time, but there are some reasons for that. Nothing major, just something I need to take care of when I can. One of those things.

Anyway, catch more of me on my blog at [link]

See you around my friends (I miss DA staff and community terribly).

Sighs...

Find me on twitter too... @robertrice or ping me on skype (rrice919)

deviantID

Hi everyone! My name is Robert and I am the former Director of Prints here at deviantArt.

Background: I have over a decade of experience in a variety of areas including business (executive level), game design and development (I've done everything but code), large format digital printing, and some other stuff I can't talk about that requires security clearance. I also ran a digital print shop for a while, so I know my way around both digital and standard printing.

I authored a book about MMORPGs. Please buy a copy, I need money to buy a magical leoplurodon. The book is titled MMO Evolution and is available at LuLu.com and on Amazon.com.

Personal: Oh, so many things. Here is the short list:

• Reading! I read everything! I also like really old books.
• Photography. Not as good as I like, but I love it all the same. I
really need to find some models to work with. My gallery needs work!
• Kyudo: Ancient art of Japanese Archery. You should be impressed.
• Digital Art. Well I like art in general, but digital art, especially
fractals, give me a nice buzz.
• Anime. SUBBED, never ever dubbed. Anime is good for you. Watch some.
• Saxophone. I play alto, tenor, and baritone. I prefer Tenor.
• Fencing. Yes, I fence competitively and I am a member of the USFA. I
fence epee and foil. Real sword fighting, not that boffo crap the SCA
geeks play around with.
• Travel! I've been to about 15 countries.
• I have a black lab named Phoebe and a calico cat named Sicily.
• I can't stand people that don't know how to drive, or use "their",
"there", and "they're" inappropriately. Deal with it.
• I am learning to play GO. Very cool stuff.

Other random stuff:

My first job in the game industry was as a "multimedia engineer". I was given Deluxe Paint (no manuals!), and 3D Studio (R1!) and told to figure them out haha. I did, and then hired and trained the entire art staff. When I was done, they put me in charge of the sound department, and I sorta had to do the same thing. Note: This was back in uh, '91 or '92. Old school!

I know a LOT about business, technology, and running small to medium sized companies. I am also an industry expert on MMO games (design, development, production, operations, and administration).

I am an INFJ, I hate mayonnaise, I read all my mail (even if I don't have time to respond), I have a great sense of humor, and I will do what I can to make the DA prints program as great as it possibly can be. Which is going to be pretty damn impressive once we get Prints II fully launched.
